How to Help Your Teen Manage Social Anxiety

Watching your teen struggle with social anxiety can be tough. They may avoid school events, parties, or even small interactions like speaking up in class. As a parent, you want to help—but it can be hard to know where to start.

Here are some ways you can support your teen while helping them build confidence and coping skills:

1. Validate Their Feelings

Social anxiety can feel overwhelming and isolating. Start by listening without judgment. Phrases like:

  • “I see this is really hard for you.”

  • “It makes sense that you’d feel nervous in that situation.”

show your teen that their emotions are real and understood. Avoid minimizing their fears with statements like “just relax” or “don’t be shy,” which can unintentionally increase anxiety.

2. Model Calm and Confident Social Behavior

Teens learn a lot from observation. Show them how to navigate social situations calmly:

  • Make small talk naturally in front of them.

  • Show healthy ways to handle awkward moments or embarrassment.

3. Encourage Gradual Exposure

Avoidance can reinforce anxiety. Work with your teen to gradually face social situations in small, manageable steps:

  • Start with low-pressure settings like talking to a friendly classmate.

  • Slowly increase exposure to larger groups or new activities.

Celebrate small wins—they matter more than you think.

4. Teach Coping Skills

Breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and positive self-talk can make social situations more manageable. Examples:

  • Box breathing: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4

  • Positive statements: “I can handle this,” or “It’s okay to feel nervous”
